Measuring depends on what your working on.

With a rectangle it is important to get the width, length and height measurements as shown above.
Measuring your Interior Walls
Assuming you have a room in the shape of a rectangle, as above. And, you have got your three measurements
.
-
Width: Rounded up to the nearest foot
-
Length: Rounded up to the nearest foot
-
Height: Rounded up to the nearest foot
You would then add your width to your length.
Example: W: 12Ft. + L: 10Ft = 22Ft
Next, you would take your total from above and multiply it by 2.
Example: 22Ft X 2 = 44Ft
Now, you take that total and multiply it by the height.
Example: 44Ft X 7Ft = 308Ft
This is your room total sq. ft. if it had no doors or windows. We aren't done yet? Now, you want to subtract your windows and doors from this total. Let's say our room has 2 doors measuring 3Ft. wide and 6Ft high. We would multiply the two as below, and, subtract it from our total above.
Example: 3Ft X 6Ft = 18Ft X 2 Doors = 36Ft
308Ft - 36Ft = 272Ft
Now, we have come down from
308 sq. ft. to 272sq. ft. Let's say our room also has a window. And, it measures 4ft. wide, by, 4ft. high. We would then do the same as we did for the door.
Example 4Ft X 4Ft = 16Ft
272Ft - 16Ft = 256Ft
Congratulations, you have just got your walls total square footage. Typical painters will charge between $1 to $3 per square foot. Depending on the shape of your walls, and, the amount of prep, and, repair required.

With a square it is important to get the width and height measurements as shown above.

Measuring your Interior Walls
Assuming you have a room in the shape of a square, as above. And, you have got your two measurements.
-
Width: Rounded up to the nearest foot.
-
Height: Rounded up to the nearest foot.
You would then multiply your width by 4.
Example: W: 12Ft. X 4 = 48Ft
Next, you would take your total from above and multiply it by the Height.
Example: 48Ft X 7Ft = 336Ft
This is your room total sq. ft. if it had no doors or windows. We aren't done yet? Now, you want to subtract your windows and doors from this total. Let's say our room has 2 doors measuring 3Ft. wide and 6Ft high. We would multiply the two as below, and, subtract it from our total above.
Example: 3Ft X 6Ft = 18Ft X 2 Doors = 36Ft
336Ft - 36Ft = 300Ft
Now, we have come down from
336 sq. ft. to 300 sq. ft. Let's say our room also has a window. And, it measures 4ft. wide, by, 4ft. high. We would then do the same as we did for the door.
Example 4Ft X 4Ft = 16Ft
300Ft - 16Ft = 284Ft

With a L-Shaped room, it is important to get the width, length, height, and inner L-Measurements, as in #1, and #2, in the pic above. The main reason you want measurements #1, and #2, is so you can subtract it from the ceiling total sq. ft. So, if you are not planning on painting the ceiling in this room, forget about measurements #1, and #2, above. And, just get your width, length and height measurements.
Measuring your Interior Walls
Assuming you have a room in the shape of an L, as above. And, you have got at least your three measurements.
.
-
Width: Rounded up to the nearest foot
-
Length: Rounded up to the nearest foot
-
Height: Rounded up to the nearest foot
And, if your doing the ceiling as well. You'll need your #1, and #2, from the pic above. Also, rounded up to the nearest foot.
Step 1: Add your width to your length.
Example: W: 12Ft. + L: 18Ft = 30Ft
Next, you would take your total from above and multiply it by 2.
Example: 30Ft X 2 = 60Ft
Now, you take that total and multiply it by the height.
Example: 60Ft X 7Ft = 430Ft
This is your room walls total sq. ft. If it had no doors, or windows.
430Ft - 36Ft = 394Ft
Now, we have come down from
430 sq. ft. to 394sq. ft. Let's say our room also has a window. And, it measures 4ft. wide, by, 4ft. high. We would then do the same as we did for the door.
Example 4Ft X 4Ft = 16Ft
394Ft - 16Ft = 378Ft
